Comments from eBay and the late eBay CEO

We contacted eBay and former eBay CEO Devin Wenig to get their thoughts on our piece, "Silicon Valley Scandal," before 60 Minutes' March 26, 2023, broadcast, which highlighted journalist Sharyn Alfonsi's account of the online marketplace.

They revealed the following to 60 Minutes:

eBay.com

We shall act infairly and properlyo to attempt to make amends for the Steiners' suffering as a result of the misbehavior of these former workers. The events of 2019 should have never occurred, and as eBay told the Steiners, we are very sorry for their suffering.

The U.S. Attorney's Office stated that eBay was "very helpful with the investigation in assisting state and federal authorities to figure out what had happened and collect evidence of the crime" when this situation initially came to light. eBay cooperated completely with the government's inquiry.

Brendan Wenig:

The events that occurred disgust me, and I feel terrible for the Steiners. They in no way merited what happened to them. The terrible behavior of a small number of former workers does not reflect my principles or the organization I oversaw for many years. I would have stopped it right away if I had known what was happening.
